In this project, JS-Houses developed and delivered a complete modular living area for workers at Heishan Coal Mine in Urumqi, China, integrating worker dormitories and a dedicated dining facility into one comprehensive accommodation solution. The project was initiated to address the growing demand for reliable living and dining facilities as the mine’s production scale expanded, particularly under the site’s long and severe winter conditions.
Based on the project’s requirements, we developed the living area using standardized modular units measuring 6055mm × 2990mm × 2900mm. The accommodation area consists of 145 standard modules, while the dining facility was assembled from an additional 28 modules, providing dining capacity for up to 240 workers.
To meet the demanding cold-climate conditions, we applied a high-performance insulation system across both the dormitory and dining areas. The walls and roofs use 120mm rock wool sandwich panels, providing thermal insulation, fire resistance and sound insulation to create a warmer and quieter indoor environment during the severe winter months.
We adopted an industrialized modular construction process in which the structural components, insulation, utilities, doors, windows and interior finishes were completed at the factory before transportation to the site. The dining modules were also prepared with interfaces for ventilation and smoke extraction, water supply and drainage, and dining equipment, allowing the modules to be rapidly lifted and assembled on site.
From foundation construction through module installation, interior and exterior finishing, and equipment commissioning, the complete project was delivered in approximately two months. This enabled the mine to establish the required accommodation and dining facilities within a short construction period while reducing the impact of harsh winter conditions on on-site construction.
The completed modular living area provides a practical combination of accommodation, dining and supporting facilities for the mine’s workforce. Its modular structure also allows the facilities to be expanded, relocated or adapted in the future according to operational requirements.
